The Makhavireth Calendar was first created and instituted under Emperor Tarekles II, the son of the Teluna Empire's founder, Emperor Tarekles I. The first rendition of the calendar was rough and disorganized, based entirely around the empire's progenitor kingdoms' understanding of cosmology. The calendar was further changed and rectified under Verinas I, younger cousin and successor to Tarekles II, after Verinas I conquered the elven nations to the east and used elven understandings of the cosmology of the world to organize the calendar into a more accurate model. Later emperors' administrations continued to expand upon the calendar and their understanding of the cosmology of their world, and the calendar of the present day is the result of a thousand years of scholarly research and study between all the races and cultures of Makhavireth.

Vennar's rotation around the sun is very exact, with the rotation completed in a cycle of 300 days, variable by about 2.4 hours. This allows a fairly regular calendar, with an extra day every ten years between the months of Valoni and Telunar. The months are structured around Aejuna, the major moon, and her position in the sky, which creates the seasons of the world. Aejuna is full in the sky roughly every 14th-16th of the month, and new every 30th-1st.

The years of the calendar are written out in reference to the empire, and then in reference to the invasion. According to standard writing, IDir and BI are written after the referenced year, and IDa and PI are written before.

IDir – Imperial Dir – Before the founding of the Empire

IDa – Imperial Da – After the founding of the Empire

BI – Before Invasion – Before the Infernal Invasion

PI – Post Invasion – After the Infernal Invasion

For example,

  • Present Calendar Year – IDa 1101, PI 53
  • Empire Founded IDa 1, 1048 BI
  • Empire collapsed IDa 735, 313 BI
  • Invasion began IDa 1048, 0 BI (29th of Telunar)

The Months are as follows:

  1. Otivis, Meaning First Month
  2. Tutivis, Meaning Second Month
  3. Thretivis, Meaning Third Month
  4. Suvenik, Meaning Sun's Dawn
  5. Valoni, Named for a mythical hero
  6. Telunar, Named after the Teluna Imperial Family
  7. Market, the month the harvest is brought to market
  8. Duskfal, Meaning Dusk's Fall
  9. Beirfal, Meaning Winter's Fall and named after the winter primordial
  10. Vuone, meaning Death, or Ending, signifying the end of the year

The days of the week are based around a nine day cycle, based on the movements of the lesser moons and their prominence in the sky as the week progresses. The suffixes Dir and Da are ancient terms of the Teluna Empire who formalized the calendar, meaning Early/Before, and Late/After, respectively. The only day of the week without either suffix is Lothti, the middle day, with the suffix Ti, associated with the balance of Time.

  • Aejudir, named after the major moon herself
  • Qefdir,
  • Astandir,
  • Esesdir, named after the Goddess of Night and Death, and the lesser moon visible in the night sky.
  • Lothti, named after the God of Time, who according to legend separates Esesrione and Itontia from each other for all but one day every century.
  • Itonda, named after the God of Light and Life, and the lesser moon visible during the day.
  • Peritda,
  • Viuda,
  • Duskda, meaning dusk, signifying the end of the week
